Flash error "toplevel.as not found"

I was working on a project which required the editing of an old FLA file with Actionscript 2 code. When i tried to compile the movie, i got the following error:

"The file 'toplevel.as', which is required for typechecking ActionScript 2.0, could not be found."

I couldn't find a solution on google, so after a few tries i found the following solution:

The solution

The problem is caused by a missing file in the Flash exe directory.

• First try to find the toplevel.as file on your computer (just use the search function)


• If you didn't find it, copy the file to a logical directory (you can download the file here: toplevel.as)


• If you find it, go to "Edit -> Preferences -> Actionscript -> Actionscript 2 settings" and add the directory with the toplevel.as file to this list.

Now press 'Ok' twice and publish your movie.
